ScottishPower Unveils 1 GW Whitelee Repowering Plan

ScottishPower has unveiled plans to repower its 533-MW Whitelee onshore wind farm in Scotland, potentially increasing the site’s capacity to around 1 GW. The project would replace existing turbines with modern, higher-capacity technology, allowing substantially more renewable electricity to be generated from the established wind farm site. Whitelee is already the UK’s largest operational onshore wind farm, and the proposed redevelopment would roughly double its generating capacity. The repowering initiative highlights the growing importance of upgrading mature renewable assets to increase clean-energy output while leveraging existing infrastructure and grid connections. The expanded Whitelee project would strengthen Scotland’s renewable energy capacity and contribute to wider UK goals for decarbonisation, domestic energy production and long-term energy security.

Egg Power Buys 72 MW Yorkshire Solar Project

Egg Power, Liberty Global’s clean energy business, has acquired project rights to the 72-MW Pilmoor Solar Farm in Yorkshire from PS Renewables, marking its 5th acquisition. Expected to become operational in Q4 2027, the project will generate enough clean electricity for around 21,000 homes and avoid approximately 9,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. A 20-year power offtake agreement is already secured. Construction is expected to support around 150 jobs and generate approximately GBP 1.7 million in economic output, while contributing about GBP 160,000 annually in business rates. The acquisition expands Egg Power’s renewable portfolio to 304 MW, following GBP 400 million in non-recourse financing secured in January 2026 for further acquisitions.

Erex Plans 2 MW Grid-Scale Battery in Japan Japanese power producer Erex Co Ltd has approved investment in a new 2-MW/8-MWh grid-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage system in Japan. The project will provide 4 hours of storage capacity, supporting grid balancing and the integration of increasing renewable electricity generation. The battery will participate in Japan’s electricity markets, helping Erex respond to fluctuations in power supply and demand while creating additional revenue opportunities from energy storage. The investment represents another step in the company’s expansion beyond conventional electricity generation into flexible energy infrastructure. With 2 MW of power capacity and 8 MWh of stored energy, the project will contribute to Japan’s growing deployment of grid-scale batteries as the country works to strengthen energy security and accelerate its transition toward renewable power.
