Whirlpool is opening the $18 million worth Findlay Wind Farm to power its manufacturing facility located in Findlay at Ohio.
Each turbine is expected to generate enough electricity equivalent to the amount required to power 300-400 average homes.
The wind farm will have a total of five wind turbines, of which Whirlpool will be making use of two and nearby Ball Company using three.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring this year and the turbines are expected to be operational by late 2015.
The project is financed by One Energy, which provides energy solutions for most of large electric consumers in the industry.
It is estimated that the turbines will offset approximately 22 percent of the Whirlpool’s electric consumption.
For each turbine, Whirlpool Corporation will create one $5,000 Megawatt Scholarship to be awarded each year the turbine is in operation.
Two scholarships (one per turbine) will be awarded annually to a graduating high school senior from the local school districts in order to encourage education in the technologies and industries of the future.
Eligible students will be those seeking a two or four year technical degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at an accredited college.

The company conducted feasibility studies before the installation of the turbines in order to ensure any hazardous impact including sound propagation and environmental threat.
Last week, Whirlpool introduced new premium front control ranges that incorporate the Flex Install (FIT) System, which are designed to facilitate simpler home appliance installation for professionals.
Designed to reduce labor time and installation costs, the FIT System premium front control ranges can accommodate any existing freestanding range cutout due to their full-depth design.
In Sep 2014, Whirlpool Water launched Refresh & Recycle, the first water filter recycling program.
This was a new recycling creativity that offers consumers an alternative to throwing out their used refrigerator water filters. Through a partnership with g2 revolution, each recycled refrigerator water filter is used in a new material rather than throwing away.
