Greentech Lead America: Xylem, a provider of water technology solutions, has been awarded a $2.9 million contract from the Beijing Drainage Group (BDG) to install Xylem’s Flygt pumps in 19 pumping stations in downtown Beijing.

Beijing Drainage Group is a wholly state-owned wastewater utility established with the approval of the Beijing Municipal Government.

The new Flygt submersible centrifugal sewage pumps will improve the stations’ water storage capability and prevent overflow by providing more efficient drainage and flood control.

Shuping Lu, vice president and country director for China, said, “Our Flygt pumps reduce the costs associated with pump station design, excavation, civil work, installation and commissioning, while maintaining superior performance even under heavy flooding conditions.”

Xylem provides technologies that allow customers to transport, treat, test and efficiently use water in public utility, residential and commercial building services, industrial and agricultural settings. In 2012 the company recorded revenues of $3.8 billion and approximately 12,700 employees worldwide.

The company’s net income was $41 million for the first quarter 2013. First quarter revenue was $879 million, down $46 million from the first quarter 2012, reflective of on-going European economic challenges, U.S. industrial weakness and lower shipments for treatment projects.

Earlier this year Xylem was also awarded a $617,000 contract from the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) for five marine monitoring buoys that will collect high-quality data for researchers studying climate change in the Caribbean Sea, including the waters of Barbados, Belize, the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago.
