Infosys has joined the RE100, a global platform of companies committed to switch 100 percent of their operations to power produced from renewables.

The Climate Group, an international non-profit working to promote clean technologies and policies, has reported that the Indian technology giant is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2018 in accordance with its commitment to RE100.

The company has been working to make its operations sustainable during the past seven years.

It has focused efforts to reduce per capita consumption of electricity by 50 per cent from the levels in 2007-2008.

Ramadas Kamath, executive vice president and head of infrastructure and sustainability at Infosys, said: “We are working toward building a clean energy future. Expanding the share of renewables is key to addressing the chronic energy crisis our country is facing today. By taking the first step towards hundred per cent renewables, we want to lead the way in creating a sustainable future and bring about an energy transformation in India.”

Infosys has already sourced 29 percent of its pan-India energy needs – about 72.08 million units – in the fiscal 2015 from alternative energy sources.

The company also generated more than 2,911 MWh of electricity from its onsite solar photovoltaic installations in India during the same period.

The Climate Group India Executive Director Krishnan Pallassana said: “We are delighted to welcome Infosys into the campaign. We need more companies willing to set bold targets and demonstrate the business case for renewable power. India plays a crucial role in sealing a global climate deal and could benefit the most from investing into a low-carbon future, which can generate sustainable and consistent energy for all.”

RE100 was launched on September 22, 2014, during the Climate Week NYC. Seventeen companies including the likes of IKEA, Swiss Re, Mars, Nestlé, and Philips, have joined the campaign.

More Indian companies are expected to join the campaign as it spreads across India.
