Odisha boasts of largest PV solar project

A 500 KW rooftop solar PV project was established at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), claimed to be the largest one in Odisha, India.

The project was inaugurated by Upendra Tripathi, secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India on Saturday.

The cost of the project is estimated to be approx. Rs 4 crore and will generate more than 7 lakh units of electricity which will offset around 650 tons of carbon emission annually.

The project got completed in just 7 to 8 months which will ensure supply of solar power for the next 25 years, helping to reduce dependence on grid power supply, generate green and clean power and mitigate GHG emissions.

Solar Energy Corporation of India has initiated the project under its grid-connected rooftop solar program, with a 30 percent subsidy on total cost.

While, KISS contributed around 20 percent of the project cost, the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) has contributed around 50 percent, explained the institution authorities.

Central Finance Assistance has been assured to various schools and colleges in the state towards setting up of more such grid-connected rooftop projects, announced Tripathi.

Central Government has planned to set up 25 solar parks across the country aggregating 20000 MW, including the 1000 MW solar park proposed for Odisha, he continued.

Odisha is expected to will avail this opportunity and submit proposals to SECI / MNRE for setting up solar power projects with speed and alacrity as it has the potential to become a major player in the field of solar energy, explained Tripathi.

KISS has always welcomed modern facilities like Wi-Fi system and CCTV cameras.

In addition, it has embraced many environment friendly projects such as bio gas plant, drinking water treatment plant, sewerage treatment plant, solar water heating system and green environment appreciation point.

It is the first of its kind among educational institutions in India and the largest in Odisha.
