Kyocera TCL Solar, a joint venture between Kyocera and Century Tokyo Leasing plans to develop and operate a 13.4-megawatt floating solar power plant on the Yamakura Dam reservoir, Japan.

Kyocera TCL Solar will build and operate the installation. The Kyocera Group will be responsible for the supply of solar modules and related equipment in addition to construction, operation and maintenance.

The project will consist of nearly 50,000 Kyocera modules installed over a water surface area of 180,000m2.

The plant will generate around 15,635 megawatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power almost 4,700 homes.

The generated electricity will be sold to Tokyo Electric Power Company.

The energy produced will be equivalent to about 7,800 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

The plant will be the largest floating solar installation in the world, once completed by the scheduled time of March 2016.

The venture is as part of an initiative taken by Public Enterprises Agency of Chiba Prefecture to construct and operate a floating solar power plant at the Yamakura Dam.

The modules will be installed on floating platforms manufactured by Ciel et Terre and Century Tokyo Leasing will provide project financing.

Moreover, with an aim to promote renewable energy, Kyocera and Century Tokyo are founding an education facility near the plant, to provide environmental classes for local elementary school students.

Last week, Kyocera’s Kagoshima Kokubu manufacturing plant has received the 2014 Environment Minister’s Award for Global Warming Prevention Activity for its environmental protection activities.

This is a record fifth consecutive year that Kyocera has been a recipient of the award.

In addition, Kyocera Group has received many awards worldwide including the Blue Angel Award 2014 for Kyocera Document Solutions Deutschland GmbH in Germany and the fourteenth consecutive annual recycling award received by Kyocera Communications from the city of San Diego (U.S.A.).
