India and Basque Country to enhance cooperation in renewable energy

enhance cooperation in renewable energy.

President of the Basque Country, Spain Patxi Lopez met
Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah in New Delhi.

Both the leaders were accompanied by high level
delegations. During the meeting the two sides discussed possibilities of
enhancing cooperation between the two sides in Renewable Energy. 

The visiting dignitary briefed Abdullah about the emphasis being laid by Basque
Country, Spain on Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy.

He made a specific mention of smart grid, electric
vehicles, on & off-shore wind energy, solar thermal & solar PV,
bio-mass, marine & geothermal energy as the areas having special attention
of their Government.  

Abdullah gave details of the developments made by India
in various areas of renewable energy, especially wind energy, solar energy,
bio-fuels and waste to energy.

Abdullah suggested that India and Spain have great
potential for enhancing corporation in promoting Renewable Energy and offered
to provide all possible assistance for the purpose. Both sides agreed to take
to share experiences of developments in renewable energy. 

The visiting dignitary invited Abdullah along with a business delegation from
India to see the developments made by Basque country in renewable energy.

Top 5 renewable energy sources in India in 2011-12

Wind power has achieved 101 MW capacity in January
2011. The 2011-12 target for Wind power is 2,400 MW. In January 2011, India’s
small hydro power segment achieved 48 MW. The target for full fiscal is 350 MW.
Currently, it has been estimated that about 11 per cent of the world’s primary
energy is met using biomass. In India, about 32 per cent of the total primary
energy use is derived from biomass and over 70 per cent of the country’s
population is still dependent on it for its energy needs. Biomass can be
converted into solid, liquid and gaseous forms depending upon the source,
requirement and application.
