Itron has signed a contract with AES Eletropaulo, a Brazilian utility, for its OpenWay Riva solution.
This is Itron’s first contract in Latin America for OpenWay Riva solution, which, Itron claims, has the ability to enable edge intelligence in third-party devices.
The OpenWay Riva-enabled meters offer a platform for various smart grid applications, offering intelligence to the edge of the network, including detection and analysis of power outages, transformer load management and revenue protection.
The technology is employed as part of AES Eletropaulo Smart Grid R&D Project launched in 2013 that aims to implement a redundant communication board embedded with radio frequency and PLC (Power Line Carrier) in the same device, applying adaptive communications and edge computing power.
Through the smart grid project Itron and AES Eletropaulo will provide adaptive communication technology, deploying a single network solution that incorporates radio frequency and power line carrier in the same device.
The solution chooses the optimal communications path in a dynamic way based on network operating conditions, data attributes and application requirements.
In addition, AES Eletropaulo will also benefit from traditional smart metering capabilities, including remote metering, remote disconnect, diversion detection and other operational efficiencies.
The entire solution will include Itron’s OpenWay Riva-enabled meters, third party electricity meters and associated software applications that will help to improve service quality, reduced operating costs as well as technical and non-technical losses of low voltage.
With revolutionary sensing and communications technology, OpenWay Riva can help utilities like AES Eletropaulo to improve operations and better manage energy resources, said Emerson Souza, managing director, Itron, Latin America.
AES Eletropaulo has a base of 6.8 million customers in São Paulo, focused on developing communication technology.
