Greentech Lead India: Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has joined the green bandwagon by signing as a brand ambassador with Schneider Electric for a major rural LED lighting initiative.
Through the project, Schneider Electric, in partnership with a non-profit organization Spreading Happiness, plans to distribute LED-based lighting systems across 25,000 villages in India. The non-profit is dedicated to work at the village-level to distribute the lighting systems and educate people on its use.
The project will use the In-Diya Lighting System from Schneider Electric to cater to the needs of various types of consumers in rural India.
Commenting on the rural lighting project, Tendulkar said, “As a country we cannot have our citizens still struggle with darkness in their lives with the setting of the sun. We have to use advancements in technology and the capabilities of international majors like Schneider Electric to deploy solutions which can brighten the lives of our countrymen.”
“For the last many years, my countrymen have showered me with unconditional love and affection irrespective of their location, social strata and personal challenges. ‘Spreading Happiness’ is my sincere effort to positively impact the present and future of the people who are an integral part of the real India,” Tendulkar said.
In-Diya Lighting System can be plugged directly into the AC supply, if available, and used directly. It can also be powered by solar panel. The system can light up a 12 feet by 12 feet room for normal activities and would last for 50,000 hours over its lifecycle, the company claims.
Spreading Happiness has already rolled out a pilot project in Nashik (Maharashtra) and is currently impacting over 1,000 villagers.
