Solar Eclipse Could Cut Dutch Solar Generation by 1.3 GW
Dutch transmission system operator TenneT is preparing for the August 12, 2026, solar eclipse, which could temporarily reduce photovoltaic generation by as much as 1.3 GW. The eclipse is expected to begin in the Netherlands at approximately 7:16 pm, peak around 8:11 pm and end near 9:03 pm. At its maximum, the Moon could obscure around 88 percent of the Sun. The rapid fall and subsequent recovery in solar production will require accurate forecasting, available balancing reserves and coordination with neighbouring electricity systems. TenneT does not expect electricity supply disruptions but is preparing measures to maintain grid stability. The event demonstrates the increasing importance of battery storage, flexible generation and demand-side management as solar power’s contribution to Europe’s electricity system expands.
RWE Completes 70 MW Enoch Hill Wind Farm in Scotland
RWE has completed construction of the 70 MW Enoch Hill onshore wind farm near New Cumnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The 15-turbine project can generate enough renewable electricity to meet the annual requirements of approximately 68,000 average UK homes. Enoch Hill is the second Scottish onshore wind farm completed by RWE during 2026, bringing their combined new generation capacity to 106 MW. Construction supported regional employment, local contractors and Scotland’s renewable-energy supply chain. The project will provide an index-linked community benefit fund worth £350,000 annually throughout its operating life. Enoch Hill expands domestic clean-power generation, strengthens Scotland’s energy resilience, reduces dependence on fossil-fuel electricity and reinforces RWE’s position in the country’s growing utility-scale onshore wind market.
OnPath Starts £50 Million Solar and Battery Project in South Yorkshire
OnPath Energy has started constructing the Common Farm Solar Park near the Todwick Road Industrial Estate in Dinnington, South Yorkshire. Representing an investment of approximately £50 million, the 116-hectare project combines up to 49.9 MW of solar capacity with a 50 MW battery energy storage system. It will generate enough renewable electricity for as many as 18,800 homes annually and connect to the Thurcroft substation approximately three kilometres away. Completion is scheduled for mid-2027. AECOM is lead consultant, while Grupotec will handle design, engineering, procurement, construction and two years of maintenance. Biodiversity measures include species-rich grassland, wildflower meadows, hedgerows and protected habitats. Annual community benefits of around £50,000 could deliver approximately £2 million during the project’s lifetime.
