SWB to Build 85MW Battery at Former Coal Site in Germany

German utility SWB AG has partnered with Be.storaged to develop an 85MW/170MWh battery energy storage system at a decommissioned coal-fired power plant in Bremen’s industrial port. The project represents a mid double-digit million euro investment and will repurpose existing grid infrastructure, including electrical connections and safety systems.  Construction will begin after dismantling old coal facilities, with new battery units, transformers and switchgear to be installed from 2027 and completion targeted by early 2028.  The project highlights innovation in reusing legacy fossil fuel infrastructure for clean energy storage, improving efficiency and reducing costs. It supports grid flexibility, renewable integration and energy security, while delivering long-term economic and environmental benefits in Germany’s energy transition.

Australia Selects 2.4GW of Renewables and Storage in CIS Tenders

Australia has selected around 2.4GW of renewable energy and battery storage projects under its Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tenders 5 and 6, marking a major step in accelerating clean energy deployment. The tenders target Western Australia’s Wholesale Electricity Market, combining large-scale renewable generation with dispatchable battery capacity to enhance grid reliability.  Tender 5 focuses on approximately 1.6GW of renewable energy, while Tender 6 supports 2.4GWh of battery storage, reflecting strong investment in hybrid energy systems and grid flexibility.  The initiative is part of Australia’s broader plan to deliver 40GW of renewables and storage by 2030, unlocking billions in private investment and supporting energy affordability.  The results highlight innovation in integrated renewable and storage solutions, improving energy security, reducing emissions, and delivering long-term benefits for customers and the national energy market.

EDP Renewables and Meta Sign 250MW Solar PPA in Arkansas

EDP Renewables North America has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Meta Platforms for the 250MW Cypress Knee Solar project in Arkansas. The deal brings total clean energy procured between the two companies to 545MW, reinforcing a growing multi-year partnership. The project reflects strong investment in renewable infrastructure and supports Meta’s goal of matching 100 percent of its electricity use with clean energy. Expected to be completed by 2028, the solar farm will generate significant local economic benefits, including around $25 million in revenue for Chicot County and hundreds of construction jobs. The initiative highlights innovation in corporate renewable procurement, strengthening grid reliability, supporting energy security, and delivering long-term environmental and economic value for communities and customers.
