VinFast, the Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer under Vingroup, is accelerating its global strategy with a sharp focus on India — the world’s third-largest automobile market — by officially inaugurating its first EV assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

Strategic Vision

VinFast’s Tamil Nadu facility marks a pivotal move in its long-term ambition to become a dominant global EV player. This plant, the company’s first outside Vietnam and third operational site globally, is a cornerstone of VinFast’s strategic roadmap that includes:

Strengthening its global manufacturing network across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Establishing India as a central manufacturing and export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Achieving its target of 200,000 vehicle sales by 2025 and scaling production to 1 million EVs annually by 2030.

Investment and Infrastructure

The Tamil Nadu project involves a significant investment with the following features:

Spread over 400 acres at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi.

State-of-the-art automation and high-tech production lines including Body, Paint, Assembly, Quality Control, and Logistics hubs.

Creation of 3,000–3,500 direct jobs and additional employment across the supply chain.

Initial production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, scalable up to 150,000 units annually.

Initial Production and Market Entry

VinFast’s Tamil Nadu plant will first assemble two premium electric SUV models — VF 6 and VF 7 — tailored for Indian consumers. The company is positioning these models as competitively priced, high-quality offerings designed to match evolving consumer preferences in India’s growing EV market.

Localization and Partnerships

VinFast is deploying a localization-focused strategy to deepen its footprint and integration within India:

Partnering with domestic suppliers to boost supply chain localization, enable technology transfer, and support skill development.

Collaborations with RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure to develop a digital-first after-sales service and support network.

Joint venture with BatX Energies to promote battery recovery and reuse, in line with VinFast’s circular economy goals.

EV Ecosystem Model

The Tamil Nadu plant is a key component of VinFast’s broader end-to-end EV ecosystem strategy in India, which encompasses:

Vehicle assembly and distribution

Dealer partnerships in major cities

After-sales and digital service infrastructure

Sustainable recycling and battery lifecycle management

Global Outlook

VinFast has already received initial export orders from several countries across South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. This positions the Tamil Nadu facility not only as a domestic manufacturing hub but also as a key global export center. The company aims to turn Tamil Nadu into the EV capital of South Asia, aligning with both state-level economic goals and global sustainability trends.
