NPS 100C magnet/direct drive wind turbines available in U.K

Northern Power Systems (NPS) has announced the availability of its permanent magnet/direct drive distributed wind turbines in the U.K.

The 100 kilowatt (kW) NPS 100C is commercially available for delivery to the British market starting in the first quarter of 2015.

Reinout Oussoren, vice president of sales, said, “The launch of the new NPS 100C allows British investors, farmers and land owners to continue to make significant returns on their investment in wind power, despite ongoing reductions in the Feed-in-Tariff.”

The magnet/direct drive turbine is an improved version of the outgoing model. It consists of a 24.4 meter rotor powered by its aerodynamics technology offering larger swept area compared to the outgoing model.

The new turbine model increases annual energy production (AEP) of the NPS 100C-24 by up to 15 percent depending on wind conditions, Northern Power Systems said.

The next generation design also reduces foundation and installation costs, thanks to the distributed wind platform model on which it was built.

The new turbine model also includes improvements in brake system, yaw configuration, electrical layout and generator cooling. Additional enhancements include an ultrasonic wind vane and anemometer.

The new class III 24.4 meter rotor is available on the 100kW and 60kW model. The NPS 100C is alternatively available with a class II 21 meter rotor option.

The announcement comes shortly after Northern Power Systems launched a new 60 KW permanent magnet/direct drive wind turbine, the NPS 60-24 in July.

NPS 60-24 was specifically engineered for the Italian and other low wind regime markets and can generate up to 15 percent more energy than the NPS 60-23, NPS said.
