Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa is building a 220-megawatt wind farm at EL Zayt in Egypt.

Under the turnkey construction contract, the company will supply turbines, besides building and operating the project for three years.

Gamesa said in a statement that it landed the project under an international tender invited by New and Renewable Energy Authority of Egypt.

The proposed wind park is to be commissioned in the second half of 2017.

The company will receive public financing from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the project.

Gamesa will begin installing and commissioning 110 units of G80-2.0 megawatt turbines along the Red Sea coast beginning September.

The company will also take care of the construction and electrical infrastructure of the wind park.

The contract also includes three years of operations and maintenance services in its purview.

Egypt wants to make room for 20 percent of clean energy in its energy mix by 2020.

It means the country will have to boost its green power capacity from 700 megawatt at present to 7.2 GW.

Gamesa got its first order from Egypt in 2004. Since then, the company has installed more than 600 megawatt of projects in Egypt and is maintaining and servicing facilities of 500 megawatt capacity.
