Greentech Lead India: Mumbai is planning to construct a wastewater treatment plant across the city’s first Metro corridor between Versova and Ghatkopar.

The proposed water treatment plant will save and recycle around 4 lakh liters of water daily to be used for washing and cleaning trains.

Reliance Infrastructure’s Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) plans to commission the wastewater treatment plant in May. The Mumbai Metro first line is expected to be completed in December 2013.

“Once commissioned, the unit comprehensive waste water treatment plant will ensure that water used in operating the Metro gets treated and pumped back into the system thereby achieving zero-waste discharge,” a MMOPL spokesperson said.

According to MMOPL officials, daily water requirement at MMOPL’s Versova Car Shed would be of 3 lakh liters for domestic usage and another 0.5 lakh liters for industrial as well as few additional requirements for other plants and equipments.

The Metro wastewater treatment is being constructed by Ahluwalia Contractors India. The wastewater treatment plant is constructed to express solidarity with the United Nations’ proclamation of the year 2013 as the “International Year of water Cooperation.”

Maharashtra is facing large-scale water shortage. Wastewater treatment plants are sprouting up across different parts of the state to address the water scarcity the city is facing due to rapid growth in population and urbanization needs.

However, the efficacy of the wastewater treatment plants in different parts of Maharashtra has come under scrutiny recently. Several wastewater treatment plants have been reported to produce treated water that contains contaminants at dangerously high levels.

The wastewater plants under dispute include the three central effluent treatment plants (CETPs) located within the industrial hubs of Talegaon, Ranjangaon and Kurkumb in Pune.  The three CETPs are run by the local associations of industries. While Talegaon and Ranjangaon have mechanical and automobile industries, Kurkumbh has mostly chemical and allied industries.
