RWE, a global renewable energy company, has initiated construction on three battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Texas, advancing its portfolio of battery storage projects under construction to 931 megawatts (MW) across California, Texas, and Arizona.

The Texas-based projects — Crowned Heron 1, Crowned Heron 2, and Cartwheel 1 — will collectively provide 450 MW of power capacity and 900 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage capacity.

Located in Fort Bend County and Sulphur Springs, these battery systems are critical to supporting the stability of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid, which has faced increased demand due to extreme heat events. Once operational, these systems will help ensure a reliable energy supply and enhance grid resilience.

Hanson Wood, Head of Development for RWE Clean Energy, said: “These battery storage projects mark a significant step in our ongoing commitment to enhancing the energy infrastructure in Texas, while growing our energy storage portfolio.”

RWE aims to expand its battery storage capacity globally to 6 GW by 2030, with projects in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. Construction of the Crowned Heron and Cartwheel projects is expected to be completed by the summer of 2025.
