Kemira has reinforced its position as a leader in sustainable chemical solutions with the release of its Sustainability Report 2025, highlighting significant progress in climate action, circular economy, renewable innovation, and responsible business practices.
Under the leadership of Linus Hildebrandt, Executive Vice President, Strategy & Sustainability, and Rasmus Pinomaa, Director of Corporate Sustainability, the company continues integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities into its long-term business strategy while accelerating decarbonization and sustainable product development.
Kemira, a Helsinki-based global chemical industry group for water-intensive industries, reaffirmed its science-based climate commitments, targeting a 52 percent reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from the 2018 baseline and achieving net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2045.
During 2025, the company reduced operational Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 43.1 percent compared with 2018 and lowered Scope 3 emissions by 26 percent from the 2021 baseline, advancing toward its target of a 33 percent reduction by 2033.
Low-carbon energy continued to play a key role in Kemira’s decarbonization strategy. The company consumed approximately 7,217 GWh of total energy during 2025, with 78 percent sourced from low-carbon or emission-free energy. Purchased energy totaled 3,217 GWh, of which 78 percent also came from low-carbon sources, supporting lower operational emissions and improved energy resilience, Kemira Sustainability Report 2025 indicated.
Kemira further strengthened its circular economy strategy by using approximately 2.57 million tons of raw materials during the year, with 55 percent originating from renewable or recycled sources. This included 52 percent recycled materials and 3 percent renewable materials, reducing reliance on virgin resources while improving manufacturing efficiency and lowering environmental impacts. Water consumption totaled 4.8 million cubic meters.
The company’s sustainable products continued delivering measurable environmental benefits. Kemira’s chemistry enabled the treatment, reuse, and recycling of approximately 21 billion cubic meters of water, equivalent to the annual water consumption of around 372 million people. Sustainability remained central to research and development, with 43 percent of new product development projects focused on renewable solutions. Kemira also holds 1,782 granted patents, reinforcing its innovation leadership.
Renewable solutions became an increasingly important growth driver during 2025, generating EUR 240 million in revenue. Kemira aims to increase renewable solutions revenue to more than EUR 500 million by 2030 through continued investments in sustainable technologies. In addition, 64 percent of the company’s product portfolio helps customers improve resource efficiency by reducing water consumption, lowering energy use, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, and optimizing raw material utilization.
The company expanded its renewable and circular product portfolio through several strategic initiatives. Kemira formed a joint venture with IFF to produce biobased materials, entered a three-year strategic partnership with Bluepha to commercialize fully biobased barrier coatings, and continued investing in activated carbon reactivation and PFAS removal technologies to strengthen sustainable water treatment. Its biomass-balanced wet-strength additives contain at least 50 percent renewable carbon, with selected products offering 75 percent and nearly 100 percent renewable carbon through mass balance attribution, helping customers reduce fossil carbon use and upstream Scope 3 emissions.
Employee safety remained a core ESG priority. Kemira maintained a Total Recordable Injury Frequency (TRIF) of 2.7, reflecting continued investments in workplace safety and operational excellence across its global operations.
The company’s sustainability performance also received external recognition. Kemira achieved a Gold EcoVadis rating with an overall score of 82 out of 100, recognizing excellence in environmental management, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
The Kemira Sustainability Report 2025 demonstrates continued progress toward ambitious climate targets, responsible sourcing, renewable innovation, and circular economy objectives. With 43.1 percent lower Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, 26 percent lower Scope 3 emissions, 78 percent low-carbon energy, 55 percent renewable or recycled raw materials, EUR 240 million in renewable solutions revenue, a target of more than EUR 500 million by 2030, 43 percent of innovation projects focused on renewable solutions, 64 percent of products improving customer resource efficiency, a TRIF of 2.7, and an EcoVadis Gold score of 82, Kemira continues to strengthen its ESG leadership while supporting customers’ transition to a lower-carbon and more resource-efficient future.
