Yingli Green Energy has supplied 1 MW of solar panels to Grupo Neoenergia, a leading energy company in Brazil, to provide clean electricity to Arena Pernambuco, the site of five 2014 FIFA World Cup matches.

The solar panels will meet 30 percent of Arena Pernambuco’s electricity demand, the company said. When the stadium is not in use, the clean solar energy will be delivered to the local community’s electricity grid through Brazil’s net energy metering program.

The ground-mount system is the first solar power plant for the Brazilian State of Pernambuco. It is spread across 15,000 square meters of land in Sao Lourenço de Mata, a suburb of Recife, the regional capital.

The project contains more than 3,650 monocrystalline PANDA Series panels, which are made from Yingli Solar’s patented, high-efficiency cell technology.

The system is projected to generate more than 1,500 MWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to approximately 6,000 Brazilians’ annual electricity consumption.

FIFA President, Joseph S. Blatter, said, “FIFA is committed to ensuring sustainability principles are applied to the 2014 FIFA World Cup planning and implementation. Large-scale solar projects like this one are contributing to our mission of reducing the negative and increasing the positive impact of the World Cup on society and the environment.”

Liansheng Miao, chairman and chief executive officer of Yingli Green Energy, said, “Thanks to its prominent location next to the stadium this 1 MW project will raise the profile of solar energy considerably during the FIFA World Cup, helping to bring our message of affordable green energy to the people of Brazil and football fans worldwide.”
