Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) has announced shutting down of TSMC Solar, its wholly owned module manufacturing subsidiary.

Late entry into the solar module market and lack of economies of scale are the reasons TSMC has cited for its exit from the business.

The factors had “led to a substantial cost disadvantage against competitors”, the company has stated.

TSMC will be redeploying employees of its solar subsidiary to its main operations, the statement adds.

The company will incur charges related to the closing of the module manufacturing facility in the third quarter and will use the remaining solar panel inventory at its buildings and facilities.
