Aneel, the energy regulator of Brazil, has granted contracts for developing 30 new solar parks in the country. The parks would cumulatively add 1 gigawatt of solar power capacity.

Brazil has been intensifying its push for renewable energy as it diversifies its energy mix to fight an energy crisis.

Brazil has granted the contracts at the recently conducted second power auction exclusively for solar installations. Reuters reports citing Aneel that the energy supply contracts for 20-year periods cover solar parks in five states and will incur total investment of about $1.2 billion.

With the latest auction, the number of solar parks being built in Brazil with contracts granted by the government totals 61. They should all be operational by late 2017, Reuters reports.
