Bharat Heavy Electricals(BHEL), a central public center enterprise, has commissioned Telangana’s first domestically manufactured Phase Shifting Transformer (PST) which offers improved transmission efficiency in power grids.

The PST is installed at the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station Stage-VI.

The PST is a flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device, which is a combination of a shunt and a series transformer. It can be operated to progress and regulate the power flow between 400kV and 220kV on both the networks in either direction.

Such transformers are suitable for modern transmission networks and smart grids. This smart grid solution is an outstanding one in the true sense considering the “remarkable benefits” it would have for transmission networks, remarked the company officials in a statement.

It is to be noted that Telangana State Power Generation Corporation has awarded BHEL with the order for providing 400 kV/220 kV, 315 MVA rating PST.

With the installation of the PST, current overloaded 220 kV lines shall be relieved, pushing the electricity through the 400 kV lines which will help escaping grid collapse during any instability, says the company press release.

BHEL’s Bhopal plant has manufactured and supplied the PST consigned for Telangana state.

The company’s sustained focus on evolving new technologies through in-house R&D initiatives has resulted in the launching of India’s first 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage Alternating Current (UHVAC) Transformer of 333 MVA rating.

Being the largest manufacturer of transformers in India, BHEL has supplied to State Electricity Boards, NTPC and Power Grid in addition to exporting to over 20 countries.
