Avista has received a combined grant of $3.2 million from Washington Governor Jay Inslee and the Washington State Department of Commerce.
Avista will invest this amount on further power integration research from wind and solar into the electrical grid. Avista is technology service providers for domains in environment and sustainability.
Avista will get around $ 14 million in smart grid matching grant from Clean Energy Fund on research for how to collect, store and distribute renewable energy from wind and solar.
Don Kopczynski, vice president, Avista, said “The investment in battery storage technology will help in creating an energy future. Energy demands to be used immediately and it is difficult to plan ahead to supply the energy as per the demands of customer. Battery storage could be the missing piece in this puzzle.”
Avista will utilize this money to install a storage battery system in a substation in Pullman, Washington. These batteries will store abundant power which can be distributed as per demand.
Power from battery storage is available instantaneously, within 50 milliseconds, ensuring quick reaction to any power demand.
The quality of energy will be available anytime to run the essential technology connected to the lives. Being part of a smart grid research aligns with the aim of the company, investing in grid renovation, added Kopczynski.
So far, Avista has invested $80 million of total funds to improve reliability, reduce losses and automate activities of smart grid technology.
