Novelis invests $48 mn at Oswego scrap aluminum recycling firm

New York based aluminum recycling facility Novelis has invested $48 million at its Oswego automotive scrap aluminum recycling firm, as part of the expansion program.

The upgraded facility will have a capacity of 10,000 metric tons (20 million lbs) of recycled scrap per month.

Moreover, the new plant will feature efficient scrap recovery and conversion technology.

The firm has improved infrastructure features like road and parking upgrades to handle increased truck traffic.

Additional recycling modifications include a new 81,000 square-foot building where processing, sorting and storing of automotive scrap aluminum can be done.

Besides, the facility is designed to meet the needs of North American automakers, who demand for aluminum automotive sheets for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Over the past five years, Novelis has made a total investment of around $400 million in Oswego.

By 2020, the company is planning creation of around 250 additional jobs in the facility.

The Novelis products are featured in over 180 vehicle models at present.Novelis has invested more than $550 million to raise its global automotive sheet capacity to 900,000 metric tons by the end of this year.

Novelis expects that sales of automotive aluminum, which currently represents about 9 percent of its total shipments, may reach 25 percent of shipments by 2020.

To promote the growing demand for automotive aluminum, Novelis will allocate 80 percent of the Oswego facility’s capacity to the automotive market.
