Greentech Lead India: The strong growth in e-waste
generation in India mounts at the rate of 15 percent since 2005 to reach 1.2
million tons by 2020, according to the latest “E-Waste Management Industry
In India 2012” report from Research and Markets.
The current growth in the Indian electronics industry
will pose serious challenges for e-waste in times to come.
However, the rapid technological advancement and
speedy obsolescence of the electronics will fuel the demand for e-recycling
solutions. Growing awareness about environmental hazards of improper disposing
of e-waste
will boost the industry.
The benefits of IT revolution have been proved and well
enumerated. However, the glamorous surface of the benefits and the wealth
created by the information technology revolution looms a darker reality. Vast
resource consumption and waste generation are increasing at alarming rates.
Leading e-waste management companies featured in the
report include E-Parisaraa and Trishyiraya Recycling India.
According to the latest annual report of the Union
ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) released earlier this year, Mumbai
tops the list of 10 most e-waste generating cities, followed by Delhi,
Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Surat and Nagpur.
India is expected to generate eight lakh tons of e-waste
in 2012 – up eight times in the past seven years, the report said.
