Today’s news on the renewable energy industry has announcements related to Solar Landscape, Avangrid, TotalEnergies, GE Vernova, among others.
Solar Landscape Launches 14 Community Solar Projects in Maryland
Solar Landscape has started 14 new community solar projects in Maryland. These projects provide 6.6 megawatts (MW) of solar energy to the state’s power grid. These are the first of 57 projects Solar Landscape plans in Maryland, all built on commercial rooftops. Together, they will generate 55 MW of solar power for 5,870 homes. Solar Landscape now leads Maryland’s rooftop community solar market. Commercial rooftop solar helps add power to the grid without using farmland.
Avangrid’s True North Solar Farm Starts Operations
Avangrid’s True North Solar project in Texas is now operational. It is the company’s largest solar project, producing 238 MW of electricity. The project supplies power to the Texas grid and supports Meta’s new data center. Data centers are expected to increase U.S. energy demand in the coming years. The solar panels use trackers from ARRAY Technologies to improve efficiency. Black & Veatch helped design and build the project.
TotalEnergies Expands Renewables in Canada
TotalEnergies has acquired nearly 1 GW of wind and solar projects in Canada from RES. This includes the 184 MW Big Sky Solar project in Alberta and 800 MW of projects under development. The company aims to reach 35 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2025. Two-thirds of Big Sky Solar’s power will be sold under long-term contracts, while the rest will be sold in the open market. The company will sell a 440 MW wind and solar project in Finland developed by VSB.
GE Vernova to supply turbines to convert the former Homer City Generating Station
GE Vernova will supply seven turbines to convert the former Homer City Generating Station, a coal-power plant in Pennsylvania, into a natural gas-powered data center campus. The project, led by Homer City Redevelopment, aims to generate nearly 4.5 GW of power, making it the largest natural gas power plant in the U.S. once completed in 2027. Construction is set to begin this year, with GE Vernova delivering the turbines by 2026.
RENOVA partners with Shoreline Wind to enhance
RENOVA, a leading renewable energy developer in Japan, has partnered with Shoreline Wind to enhance construction simulations for its onshore wind projects. The collaboration aims to improve efficiency in the development and pre-development phases, reducing costs and accelerating project timelines. RENOVA’s Reihoku-Amakusa project in Japan, currently under construction, will feature 13 wind turbines with a total capacity of 54.6 MW, overcoming logistical challenges like tidal restrictions and limited storage space. Meanwhile, the Mabini Wind Power Project in the Philippines, in its planning stage, is set to generate around 50 MW from 6 to 8 turbines, facing infrastructure limitations such as the need for a Temporary Landing Pad.
