Google, the technology giant is giving prize money of $ one million (Rs. 6 crore) for structuring a compact resolution for converting renewable energy into an usable power source at home, reports NDTV.

Google jointly with Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), has initiated a ‘Little Box Challenge’ to design and create a kW-scale power inverter, a device that alter renewable energy like solar and wind, before changing it into electric power for home.

The given challenge is that the innovated device should be of the size of a laptop, almost 1/10th of the present size.

In their official blogpost Google states, “We are looking for someone to build a kW-scale inverter with a power density greater than 50W per cubic inch. Do it best and we will give you a million bucks.”

This innovation is going to transform the future of electricity. Inverters are going to be an integrated part of the economy as well as environment with the swift growth of power sources like solar PV and batteries, says report quoting Google.

Moreover, the innovative ideas pouring in will have extensive applicability in different areas, with escalated efficiency and low-costs, adds report.

According to Google, a smaller inverter would empower more homes powered by solar with increased, skillfully circulated electrical grids and efficient electricity linking to any part of the world.

A smaller inverter means low cost micro-grids disseminated in remote areas. It grants you light even during blackout through the battery of electric car or perhaps enable improvements nobody thought of, writes, Eric Raymond, Google’s Green Team.

The last date for registration is September 30, 2014. The grand prize winner will be announced in January 2016.
