The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is providing
Central Financial Assistance to set up small / micro hydro projects both in
public and private sectors. The Ministry is giving special emphasis for the
development of micro hydro and watermills for remote areas in the
country.
This financial assistance is the part of the implementing
program for development of small hydro power projects in the country by the
Ministry. The Ministry Central Financial support is also given to the State
Government for identification of new potential sites including survey and
preparation of DPRs and renovation and modernization of old small hydro power
(SHP) projects.
To date, 847 SHP projects with an aggregate capacity of
3197 MW have been setup and 356 projects aggregating to 1045 MW are under
implementation in the country.
The state of Himachal Pradesh has installed 126 SHP
projects and producing 440.965 MW from these projects. Karnataka is the largest
producer of electricity from 123 SHP with 856.25 MW.
Apart from fiscal and financial incentives, technical
support is extended on various aspects of small hydro through Alternate Hydro
Energy Centre, IIT Roorkee and other technical institutions.
