Today’s renewable energy news includes announcements on APM Terminals, Waaree Solar, Ballard Power, France launching floating offshore wind farm, among others.
APM Terminals Pier 400 Adds Electric Trucks, Launches Workforce Training
APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles has deployed Orange EV electric yard trucks as part of its fleet electrification efforts. The terminal is also launching a workforce training program in partnership with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) to support equipment operation and maintenance. The initiative aligns with APM Terminals’ strategy to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The training includes technical skills and certifications. The move supports local employment and reduces terminal emissions through zero-emission vehicle deployment.
Pine Gate Renewables Orders 500MW of Solar Modules from Waaree Solar Americas
Pine Gate Renewables has signed an agreement with Waaree Solar Americas to purchase 500MW of solar modules manufactured in the United States. Waaree will supply its U.S.-made mono PERC solar modules from its facility in Texas. The first deliveries are expected in late 2024. The agreement supports Pine Gate’s project pipeline and aligns with efforts to expand domestic clean energy manufacturing. Waaree Solar Americas is the U.S. subsidiary of India-based Waaree Energies, which is also expanding its global production.
Ballard to Supply 1.5MW Fuel Cell Engine for Sierra Northern Railway
Ballard Power Systems has received an order to deliver a 1.5MW fuel cell engine to Sierra Northern Railway. The engine will power a zero-emission locomotive as part of a project funded by the California Energy Commission. The hydrogen-powered locomotive will operate in California’s Central Valley. Delivery is expected in 2025. This marks Ballard’s first fuel cell engine deployment in a U.S. locomotive. The project supports California’s efforts to reduce emissions in freight rail operations and expand use of hydrogen technology.
France Launches First Floating Offshore Wind Farm
France has launched its first floating offshore wind farm, the 30MW Provence Grand Large project, located 17 kilometers off the coast of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhone. The project consists of three 10MW turbines mounted on floating foundations. Developed by EDF Renewables and Maple Power, the wind farm is connected to the grid and will supply electricity to around 45,000 people. The installation serves as a demonstration project for floating wind technology. Data from operations will inform future commercial-scale floating offshore wind development in France.
