ABB has announced plans to invest about $75 million in India during 2026 to expand its manufacturing footprint and strengthen research and development capabilities. The move builds on the company’s investment of more than $35 million in 2025 and underscores its commitment to a “local-for-local” strategy aimed at meeting rising domestic demand while supporting exports to regional markets.
Around 85 percent of ABB’s products and solutions sold in India are already manufactured locally. The new investments will accelerate production capacity across the company’s Electrification, Motion, and Automation businesses, enabling it to address growing demand from sectors such as energy transition, grid modernization, data centers, metro rail, and high-speed transportation.
Strengthening India as a Global Manufacturing Hub
Over the past decade, ABB has invested more than $230 million in India to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and position the country as a global production hub. The company is marking its 76th year of operations in India in 2026, reflecting its long-term commitment to the market.
According to Morten Wierod, Chief Executive Officer of ABB, the latest investment aligns with the company’s strategy to support infrastructure expansion in one of its fastest-growing markets.
Demand is rising due to India’s energy transition, modernization of power grids, rapid growth of data centers, and expansion of metro and high-speed rail networks. The expanded facilities will help ABB meet this demand while strengthening its ability to serve other regional markets.
The investments are also expected to create about 300 new skilled jobs in engineering, operations, and research roles.
Major Expansion in Bengaluru
ABB is allocating $14 million to expand its Nelamangala campus facilities near Bengaluru. The investment will enhance production capabilities and support the introduction of new technology ranges in 2026, including advanced electrical protection and enclosure solutions.
A key focus is the expansion of the converter manufacturing facility, which will support India’s fast-growing sustainable mobility sector. Over the next three to five years, ABB aims to broaden its portfolio for high-speed rail and metro transportation, covering propulsion systems, converters, traction motors, and related services.
The company’s newly developed Nelamangala Campus 2 will significantly increase production capacity for uninterruptible power supply solutions, with output expected to rise tenfold. The facility will also include dedicated R&D infrastructure and manufacturing for rectifiers, excitation and blending systems, and integrated gas analyzer systems.
In Bengaluru’s Peenya industrial area, ABB is investing $21 million to expand manufacturing capacity for low-voltage drives and specialized motors, including flameproof motors, roller-table motors, and large smoke-venting motors.
The Peenya site will also gain an innovation laboratory, remote monitoring and diagnostics systems, upgraded training facilities, and improvements to its high-precision electromagnetic flowmeter calibration equipment.
Hyderabad R&D and Engineering Hub
ABB is also strengthening its research and engineering presence in Hyderabad through a multi-phase project. The company is investing $12 million in the first phase, which includes relocating operations in February 2026 to a leased office and laboratory facility spanning more than 12,400 square meters.
A second phase planned for 2026 includes building a state-of-the-art high-power laboratory on ABB-owned land covering 16,630 square meters. The facility will host engineering and R&D teams working on advanced power technologies.
Manufacturing Expansion in Nashik and Vadodara
In Nashik, ABB is investing $22 million to expand production of indoor and outdoor circuit breakers. The facility will also increase manufacturing capacity for vacuum interrupters and support localization of 33kV primary gas insulated switchgear.
The Nashik expansion will further support the development of SF6-free technologies, with localization targeted by 2028.
ABB is also investing $6 million in Vadodara to expand manufacturing capacity for slow-speed synchronous generators and induction motors. These upgrades will help meet rising demand from industries such as metals, oil and gas, cement, and wind energy.
The Vadodara facility will also include expanded service workshops, improved infrastructure, and a new training center.
ABB’s Growing Presence in India
ABB generated more than $1.5 billion in revenue in India in 2025, representing about 4 percent of the company’s global revenue. The company employs more than 10,000 people in the country and operates nearly 25 manufacturing, distribution, and operational facilities, along with five major R&D centers.
