Supernova: India’s own green car steals the auto show

The Supernova Electric Vehicle (SNEV), India’s first indigenously-developed electric sports car will hit the roads next year.

The Golden Arrow Wireless, based in Gujarat has showcased the prototypes of the green car at Gujarat’s first automobile exhibition the “Auto Show 2014” recently held in Gandhingar.

The company is in search of suitable land in the state to set up a factory where it also later plans to manufacture electric buses and three-wheeler autos.

The SNEV will cost between Rs1.5 million to Rs2.5 million and will cover 1,000 km with a single charge of its batteries with the top speed of 150km an hour, commented, Shashi Vyas, CEO, Golden Arrow Wireless.

The company also plans to launch a four-seated family car ranging from Rs. 4 -8 lakh, and sports cars ranging between Rs. 15 -25 lakh.

The sports and hatchback models, built at Aslali workshop is awaiting approvals from the Automotive Research Association of India before establishing manufacturing facilities at multiple locations, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Raipur.

The sports car will have a combined body of carbon fiber and fiber glass whereas the family car will have carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.

The vehicle will have three battery options, the lead acid, lithium ion and super capacitors. The lead acid version would take eight hours to charge and the lithium ion battery would take two hours to charge whereas the super capacitors would take less than five minutes to charge.

So far, Golden Arrow has raised Rs5 billion from investors and is looking to raise more funds to start manufacturing the electric vehicles.

It already has 250 bookings for the SNEV with delivery scheduled for 2015-end.

The three-day event was organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Industrial Extension Bureau (IndextB) and Government of Gujarat.
