Foxconn has established a new company, Foxconn New Energy Battery (Zhengzhou), in Henan, China, dedicated to battery manufacturing, sales, and R&D in automotive components.
Foxconn’s approach to solid-state batteries will involve partnerships with established battery manufacturers, targeting simpler manufacturing processes and focusing on expertise-building in the two-wheeler market.
Solid-state battery production is complex and costly, with large-scale production elusive due to technical and cost challenges. Foxconn’s competitors, like QuantumScape and Solid Power, have worked for over a decade on automotive solid-state batteries but have not yet reached mass production.
Foxconn plans to concentrate on solid-state batteries for electric two-wheelers rather than cars, which have lower power demands and simpler manufacturing requirements, making them an ideal testing ground for Foxconn.
Since entering the solid-state battery field in 2020, Foxconn has built its R&D capabilities, forming partnerships and establishing its first battery plant in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with ongoing collaboration efforts focused on the Indonesian market.
Foxconn aims to expand its battery technology into electric vehicle (EV) systems, gradually building a comprehensive supply chain that includes materials, cells, and battery packs for future automotive applications.
