Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is set for the development of electric vehicle charging networks. Chinese business newspaper 21st Century Business Herald reports that the local governments of the region will take up the initiative.

The city of Beijing aims to raise its sales target of new-energy vehicles to 170,000 vehicles by 2017. It had earlier set the target as 30,000 in 2015 and 60,000 in 2016.

Shenzhen aims to sell 35,000 vehicles, Shanghai 13,000 and Guangzhou a total of 10,000 electric vehicles.

According to the report 14,547 electric vehicles obtained license plates in Shanghai in H1, 2015. It was an 888 percent increase year-on-year. Beijing saw sale of 5,091 EVs. Guangzhou and Shenzhen showed lackluster growth.

Some local governments have been offering incentives to encourage sale of EVs. The sops include free license plates or financial subsidies and tax breaks.

Despite the sops, sale of EVs has been limited owing to paucity of charging facilities, the report notes.
