NPG energy has inaugurated its NPG BIO II biogas plant, at the Deurganckdok at Antwerp Port. The event was attended by many leading personalities.

This biogas plant is the first of three openings expected to come over in coming year. Through these new plants, Enovos is launching itself as a third party project developer.

In collaboration with NPG energy, Enovos plans to provide a solution to the energy shortages and increase the sustainability of energy production in Belgium. With the operation of three biogas plants over the coming twelve months, NPG energy is kicking the leading trend in Belgium.

The plant was constructed in just ten months. It has a total of 3 MW capacity and will produce 21 GWh power equivalent to the energy use of around 6,000 households.

The facility is fuelled by liquids, coming from waste and residual flows from the food industry. After a preliminary treatment, they are fed into the fermenters, where they undergo fermentation process. The biogas produced is then converted into electricity and heat using co-generation engines, explained, André Jurres, CEO, co-founder, NPG energy.

A major portion of the energy produced will be used by Antwerp Gateway; with the remainder being supplied into the grid. The residual heat will be used for treatment of flows and will use for the operation of installations in plant.

Since 2013, subsidies for biogas production have been reduced considerably and limited to a ten-year period. An extension of five years is given upon application after this period, but without any guarantee.

Bio-methane plants play a key role in the fleet of energy production plants. With their continuous production, they contribute towards balancing production along with other renewable resources and hence guarantee the stability of energy supply for the grid, noted, Daniel Christnach, member, Board of Directors, NPG energy, head, Renewable Energies & Cogeneration with Enovos states.

Ultimately, the biogas sector will replace a large gas power plant of 400 MW and play a key role in other sectors such as transportation by transforming gas into CNG for vehicles. The sustainable energy sector is also responsible for job creation.
