RWE Starts Hambach Solar and Battery Storage Project in Germany

RWE has started construction of the 16.5MW Manheimer Bucht solar park at the Hambach opencast mine in Germany’s Rhein-Erft district. The project will include around 25,300 solar modules and is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply approximately 5,000 households annually once operational. RWE said the solar park in Kolpingstadt Kerpen is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 as part of its wider renewable energy expansion at the Hambach site. The development will also include a co-located battery energy storage system with 80MWh capacity. Construction of the storage facility is due to begin this summer, with commissioning targeted for the end of 2026. RWE already operates multiple solar and storage assets at Hambach in partnership with NEULAND HAMBACH GmbH, highlighting the continued transformation of former mining areas into renewable energy and energy storage hubs supporting Germany’s energy transition.

Enel Acquires 270MW US Solar Portfolio

Enel has agreed to acquire a portfolio of around 270MW of operational solar plants in the United States through Enel Green Power North America. The $140 million deal includes seven photovoltaic plants and is expected to contribute around $20 million annually in ordinary EBITDA. The portfolio comprises two solar plants in Virginia with more than 120MW combined, one project in North Carolina exceeding 90MW and four plants in South Carolina totalling around 50MW. The acquisition marks Enel’s first renewable energy investments in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina and aligns with the company’s strategy of expanding renewable capacity through operational asset acquisitions in key international markets. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026 subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions, with financing provided through Enel’s existing operational cash flows.

OCI Energy and CPS Energy Break Ground on Texas Battery Storage Project

OCI Energy and CPS Energy have started construction on the Alamo City Battery Energy Storage System in Bexar County, Texas. The standalone battery project will provide 120MW/480MWh of storage capacity and is expected to power around 30,000 homes for up to four hours during peak demand periods. OCI Energy will retain ownership of the facility under a long-term storage capacity agreement, while CPS Energy will operate the system to support grid reliability in the San Antonio region.  The project is backed by several industry partners, with ING providing construction financing, LG Energy Solution Vertech supplying battery technology and Elgin Power Solutions serving as EPC contractor. Commercial operations are expected to begin in 2027.
