Verizon Communications, the U.S. wireless carrier, is investing $40 million to triple its use of solar energy this year.

SunPower will install 10.2 MW of solar power at eight Verizon sites in New York, California, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

The company has invested $100 million last year for five MW of solar capacity and 10 MW of fuel cells at six sites.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, Verizon will become the most solar-generating capacity in US telecommunication sector with this new addition.

With the decrease in solar panels price, the investment in new rooftop, parking-structure and ground-mounted systems have come down.

Verizon aims to reduce their carbon emissions, an effort that’s driving the decision to add solar power, which will also help to cut their energy costs, explained, Howard Wenger, president of regions, SunPower.
