Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) is to develop two wind farms at Huanghua in China’s Hebei province.

The Singapore-based company is investing in the projects through a joint venture with Guohua Energy Investment of which it owns 49 percent.

The projects will expand Sembcorp’s total wind power capacity in Huanghua to 297 megawatts.

Sembcorp has already begun operation of a wind farm with 48-megawatt capacity in Jiedijianhe.

The 94 million Singapore dollar wind farm supplies power to the Hebei South grid.

The farm has twenty-four wind turbines with power capacity of 2,000 kilowatt each.

Hebei Development and Reform Commission has also given its approval to Sembcorp to develop a 150-megawatt wind farm in Laoshibeihe.

The company’s investment in the farms will bring its total wind power capacity in Huanghua to 297 megawatts.

According to an official statement, Sembcorp will begin construction on the 150-MW wind farm estimated to cost about 0.3 billion Singapore dollars this year.

The company’s share of equity investment in the project would be about 45 million Singapore dollars.

A mix of internal and external borrowings would be used to raise the funds. And the project is expected to be completed by the second half of 2017, the release stated.

Sembcorp currently has a total of 446 megawatts wind power capacity in operation and under development in China.

“When fully operational, wind power operations in Huanghua will reduce approximately 650,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum, further enhancing the clean energy supply in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Besides wind, Sembcorp has invested in solar power, energy-from-waste and biomass assets in Singapore, China, India and the United Kingdom. It owns 1,200 megawatts capacity globally.

The company invested in China two decades back and its presence today spans 15 provinces.
