RWE Innogy UK is beginning work on an 18-megawatt wind farm at North Devon in southwestern England next month.

According to a statement, the UK renewables unit of the German utility will begin development of the site compound, access tracks, turbine foundations and substation building as part of the initial works.

The company plans to complete work on the turbines early next spring. And the facility will be fully operational next summer, a statement said.

RWE Innogy UK received consent for the wind farm from the Planning Inspectorate in September 2012.

Following that, I&H Brown was appointed balance of plant contractor and support for the project was assigned to SSE Contracting.

The wind farm will comprise nine turbines to be produced by German wind turbine maker Senvion. Orders for the machines were placed earlier this week.

Michael Williams, Senior Project Manager at RWE Innogy UK said: “Once operational the wind farm will have a total generating capacity of 18MW. That is enough clean energy to power the annual domestic needs of around 8,900 average UK households.”

Williams believes it makes sense to maximize the benefits of the natural and sustainable resources of the UK, which is the windiest country in Europe.
