As of January 2014, India has achieved only 1174 MW of wind power during the FY 2013-14 as against the target capacity of 2500 MW, said a statement released by the Minister of New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah today.
If this pace continues, India is likely to miss this year’s target by a wider gap.
During 2012-13, India had missed the 2500 MW target by 800 MW, after witnessing two high-performing periods during 2010-12. The capacities achieved during 2010-11 and 2011-12 were 2350 MW and 3196 MW as against the target of 2000 MW and 2400 MW.
Wind energy producers get Rs.0.50/unit under the Generation Based Incentive (GBI) as incentive for generation of power subject to a ceiling of Rs.1.00 crore/MW. The benefit is to be availed in more than 4 years and less than 10 years.
During 2013-14 the expenditure under GBI scheme rose to INR 224.56 crore, from just INR 44.46 crore in the previous year.
India has the potential to become a major wind power producer in the world. The state of Tamil Nadu contributes a major share to the market with 7251 MW capacity installation completed as of January 2014.
