Chinese wind turbine maker Xinjiang Goldwind Science and Technology has landed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the 32.5-MW Excelsior wind park in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

It is the company’s second deal in the country this year with the local independent power producer Biotherm Energy.

Excelsior wind part was one of the projects auctioned during the fourth round of Renewable Energy IPP Procurement (REIPPP) programme of South Africa.

The project was awarded to Biotherm Energy for off-take of power from the project. In turn, Biotherm signed the EPC contract with Goldwind on June 7.

About two months ago, Goldwind had won a similar contract for the 120-MW Golden Valley wind project from Biotherm Energy. Golden Valley wind project, too, is located in Eastern Cape Province.

Under the latest EPC contract, Goldwind is to install 13 units of its 2.5-MW, 109/2500 direct-drive permanent magnetic wind turbines.

The first contract that the Chinese company had won in Africa was the 51-MW Adama wind farm in central Ethiopia

Goldwind, which was established by a former teacher who grew up in Xinjiang, a desert province in far-west China, is the world’s second-largest wind turbine maker. It is only behind Vestas, the Denmark-based company, in the wind turbine market.
