RWE is accelerating its renewable energy expansion in Italy, more than doubling its capacity under construction to 235 megawatts in 2026 as it strengthens its role in supporting the country’s energy transition.
After launching 112 MW of wind and solar projects in 2025, the company has now started building an additional 123 MW in 2026. Once completed, these projects are expected to generate enough clean electricity to power more than 190,000 Italian households.
Wind and Solar Projects Advancing Across Italy
Construction activity is ramping up nationwide, with three onshore wind farms, one large-scale solar plant and six Agri-PV projects progressing simultaneously. In total, 26 wind turbines and 127,000 solar modules are being installed.
In 2025, RWE began building its first commercial-scale Agri-PV plants, Morcone with 9.8 MWac and Acquafredda with 9.3 MWac, both located in the Campania region. These projects are now in the commissioning phase.
The company also initiated two major onshore wind projects: the 47 MW Serra Palino wind farm in Apulia and the 45 MW Venusia wind farm in Basilicata.
66 MW Alas Wind Farm in Sardinia
In 2026, RWE started construction of the Alas onshore wind farm in Sardinia. The project will feature ten turbines, each with a capacity of 6.6 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to 66 MW. Commissioning is scheduled for 2027, further strengthening the company’s wind footprint in southern Europe.
Solar Growth in Campania
RWE is also developing the Ponte Valentino 1 and 2 ground-mounted solar parks in Benevento, Campania. With a combined capacity of 19 MWac, the projects will deploy more than 32,000 solar modules across 25 hectares. Commissioning is planned for 2026.
Expansion of Agri-PV Projects Across Regions
In addition to its initial Agri-PV plants, RWE is constructing four advanced Agri-PV projects with a combined capacity of 38.2 MWac and approximately 50,000 solar modules:
Acquafredda 2 with 11.7 MWac in Campania
Enna with 9.5 MWac in Sicily
Carcitella with 8 MW in Sicily
Cava with 9 MWac in Calabria
All four projects are expected to be commissioned in 2026.
These Agri-PV installations use elevated or high-tilt mounting structures, enabling agricultural activities such as sheep grazing and crop cultivation beneath the solar panels. The elevated systems also help protect crops from hail, frost, drought and heavy rainfall. RWE plans to monitor plant performance while collecting meteorological and agricultural data to further optimise Agri-PV technology.
Serra Giannina Wind Farm Set to Begin
Construction of the Serra Giannina wind farm in Potenza, Basilicata, is expected to start in the coming weeks. The 42 MW project, which secured support in the FER-X auction, will consist of six turbines and further expand RWE’s renewable pipeline in Italy.
Strong Presence in Italy’s Renewable Market
Through RWE Renewables Italia, the company has established itself as a key player in the Italian renewables market. Its integrated approach spans project development, construction, operations and power marketing.
RWE currently operates 17 onshore wind farms in Italy with a combined installed capacity of 589 MW, enough to supply more than 500,000 Italian households annually with green electricity.
With 235 MW now under construction and additional projects in the pipeline, RWE is significantly strengthening its renewable energy footprint in Italy while contributing to the country’s decarbonisation and energy security goals.
