The 6th World Non-grid Wind Power and Energy Conference were held in Beijing recently.

The conference was hosted by chief scientist of the Chinese national “973” plan for large-scale non-grid wind power projects, Gu Weidong.

The event announced prime achievements linked to non-grid wind power system and its applications on high-energy-consuming industries.

World Wind Energy Association chairman and World Council for Renewable Energy senior vice president Preben Meagard, World Wind Energy Association president He Dexin, Academy of Macroeconomic Research of the National Development and Reform Commission vice dean Ma Xiaohe, head of the energy research institute at the National Development honored the function with their presence.

In addition, Reform Commission Han Wenke, head of the Industry Economy Research Institute Wang Changlin, State Counselor Xu Dingming, former vice president at Tsinghua University Ni Weidou and many experts and scientists on wind energy and related fields were also present.

Professor Gu has devoted more than 30 years to the research of the non-grid wind power system and its applications in high-energy-consuming industries.

Gu and his research group have been successful in their progress with the integrated system of non-grid wind power with high-energy-consuming industries, which, in various iterations, combines wind power respectively with the seawater desalination, electrolytic aluminum, hydrogen production and coal to gas industries is an epoch-making innovation.

The combination of this non-grid wind power with high-energy-consuming industries, have solved the wind surfing, off grid and other issues related with wind power, converting these high-energy-consuming industries totally into green energy.

By reducing coal consumption and greenhouse gas emission, it delivers massive economic and environmental benefits.

This integrated system makes high-energy-consuming industries efficient for managing flexible loads, allowing coal-based power grid to have significantly higher flexibility in load balancing.

The utilization rate of the power grid would be increased from 30 percent to 55- 60 percent and the present 600 MW of power generation from China’s coal-fired plants would rise by 30 percent.

Meanwhile, it can also solve the issue of using large-scale wind power and solar energy concurrently on the same system. The proportion of energy delivered through the power grid attributable to renewable would be boosted by more than 40 percent.

With this integrated system, there would no longer be any need to build any new large-scale thermal power plants for at least ten years nor any nuclear power plants for at least 20 years in China.
