Zentiva has strengthened its sustainability leadership with science-based climate targets, renewable energy expansion, biodiversity initiatives, and community engagement programs, according to its latest sustainability update. The pharmaceutical company continues to integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) priorities across its operations under the leadership of Ines Windisch, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability.

A major milestone for Zentiva was the validation of its climate commitments by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming that its emissions reduction pathway aligns with efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C, Guillermo Angeleri, Corporate Sustainability Lead at Zentiva, said.

As part of its decarbonization strategy, Zentiva has committed to reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 by 63 percent by 2034 compared with its 2021 baseline. The company has also pledged to achieve Net-Zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050, Zentiva Sustainability Report 2025 indicated.

Zentiva reported measurable progress toward these goals, achieving a 10 percent reduction in combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions during the reporting period. The improvement was driven by investments in energy efficiency, renewable electricity sourcing, and operational enhancements across manufacturing sites.

The company increased production to 718.6 million standard manufacturing units (SMUs), supported by investments in capacity expansion. Despite higher output, Zentiva limited its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions intensity to 34.99 grams of CO2e per SMU, highlighting the successful decoupling of production growth from carbon emissions.

As part of its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments, Zentiva achieved a 24.7 percent reduction in absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared with its 2021 baseline. The company also recorded a 1.05 percent reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions from its 2024 baseline.

Zentiva’s decarbonization strategy targets a 63 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2034 from 2021 levels and a 63 percent reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2034 from a 2024 baseline. Looking further ahead, the company aims to reduce Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 90 percent by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement.

Renewable energy adoption continued to advance, with 95 percent renewable electricity across operations, including 100 percent renewable electricity at all European manufacturing sites and 60 percent renewable electricity at its Ankleshwar facility in India through a power purchase agreement. Zentiva also achieved 43 percent green steam usage, while 42 percent of total energy consumption now comes from renewable sources, representing a 10 percent improvement since 2021.

Zentiva revealed that 83 percent of its global electricity consumption comes from renewable sources. In addition, all European Union manufacturing facilities are powered by 100 percent renewable electricity, significantly lowering Scope 2 emissions and supporting the company’s transition to cleaner energy systems.

Resource efficiency and circular economy practices also delivered notable results. Since 2021, Zentiva has doubled the volume of water recycled and reused across its operations, reducing dependence on freshwater resources and improving operational efficiency. The company further reported that 47 percent of operational waste is diverted from disposal through recycling, reuse and recovery initiatives, helping reduce landfill impacts while supporting circular resource flows.

Sustainability investments remain focused on improving manufacturing efficiency and resilience. Zentiva continues to direct sustainability-focused funding across four major manufacturing facilities while supporting operations in more than 30 countries. These investments are designed to improve resource productivity, strengthen local sourcing, and reduce transportation-related emissions through supply chain localization.

Beyond operational sustainability, Zentiva is expanding its environmental stewardship efforts through biodiversity programs. The company has planted more than 130,000 trees through reforestation and habitat restoration initiatives aimed at supporting ecosystem recovery and natural carbon sequestration.

In addition, Zentiva has adopted more than 3.5 million bees through biodiversity programs that help protect pollinator populations and promote healthier ecosystems. The initiative highlights the company’s commitment to environmental conservation beyond its direct manufacturing footprint.

Community engagement remains another important pillar of Zentiva’s sustainability strategy. During the reporting period, the company completed more than 120 community projects across Europe and India. These initiatives were supported by a workforce of more than 5,400 employees who contributed to environmental, healthcare and social development programs.

The company’s ESG performance has received significant external recognition. Zentiva earned an EcoVadis Gold Medal, placing it among the top 2 percent of pharmaceutical companies assessed worldwide for sustainability performance. It also received the EUPD Group Transparency Award 2025 for excellence in ESG disclosure, reporting quality and transparency.

With SBTi-validated climate commitments, a 63 percent emissions reduction target by 2034, Net-Zero ambitions for 2050, a 10 percent reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, 83 percent renewable electricity usage, 100 percent renewable electricity across EU manufacturing facilities, doubled water recycling since 2021, 47 percent waste diversion, operations in more than 30 countries, investments across four major manufacturing sites, more than 130,000 trees planted, over 3.5 million bees adopted, more than 120 community projects, over 5,400 employees engaged, and healthcare access for more than 100 million patients in over 40 countries, Zentiva continues to build a more sustainable and resilient pharmaceutical business while creating long-term environmental and social value.
