Liberty Global has announced environmental targets as part of its Corporate Responsibility (CR) commitment.

After releasing the 2013 Corporate Sustainability report, Liberty Global said it has committed for an improvement in energy efficiency of their electricity consumption by 15 percent every year to be achieved by 2020. They also want to achieve five times more carbon efficiency through this period beginning 2012.

In 2013, Liberty Global delivered 29 percent increase in energy efficiency and 32 percent increase in greenhouse gas efficiency. This was achieved through investment in new technologies, energy use optimization at data centers and production and procurement of renewable energy.

‘Empowering a Digital Society’, the Corporate Responsibility Report, is prepared according to the G4 basic structure that demands disclosure on certain topics of material interest to stakeholders.

The report highlights repairing of 4.3 million set-top boxes and modems in 2013, which on discarding could have produced 7,200M tons of waste and thus saving $280 million, reduction in energy consumption of Horizon Multimedia Gateway by 40 percent and improvement of broadband speeds with good connectivity for subscribers enabled with hotspots, homespots and Community WiFi.

Rick Westerman, head, CR Committee, Liberty Global, said, “Each year we embed the culture of Corporate Responsibility more deeply into business, while adapting to the inevitable changes in this fast-paced markets, the aspirations of our increasingly sophisticated customers, and the significant growth of our company.”

By publishing these environmental targets, the organization has challenged itself to achieve better in future, added Westerman. In 2013 Liberty Global acquired Virgin Media, UK, that enhanced potential of the company to accomplish the CR agenda.
