Southern Research enhances scientific and engineering initiatives and impacts the environment in a number of ways, showing the commitment to the advancement of Alabama’s research community, said, Arthur J. Tipton, president, CEO, Southern Research Institute.

The Institute, in collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Southern Company and Alabama Power has accomplished the SSRC at Southern Research’s engineering campus in June 2014 with a total investment of $500,000.

The SSRC was built with a purpose of researching the climatic effects in the southeastern U.S on the performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. Data obtained will give detailed knowledge about solar PV applications in the Southeast, providing insight into the optimal design of solar PV systems for utilities.

Renewable energy is a key component of sustainable development, and as one of Alabama’s leaders in energy and environmental initiatives, Southern Research is proud to contribute to its advancement, said, Michael D. Johns, vice president, engineering division, Southern Research.

The SSRC features multiple alignments PV solar panel arrays, micro inverters, and an advanced energy-monitoring system. The solar generation systems include trackers and southwest-facing solar PV systems to assess the afternoon sun utilization, when electricity use shoots up.

Additionally, an enhanced aging testing capabilities to pretend multi-year life and performance of PV systems is also present. Currently, it generates 12 kilowatts of electricity.
