Marks & Spencer builds largest rooftop solar panel in UK

Marks & Spencer is building the UK’s largest array of rooftop solar panels on its distribution centre in Castle Donington, reports The Guardian.

The solar series will consist of more than 24,000 photovoltaic panels and the system will generate sufficient energy to power the distribution centre for the goods M&S sells via its online store.

Recently, British retailers are investment more in clean power showing a trend towards renewable energy.

In 2007, Tesco topped the distribution centre for its US venture Fresh & Easy with country’s largest rooftop solar panel while Sainsbury’s is the largest rooftop solar operator in Europe.

Sainsbury’s will complete the installation of 170,000 panels above stores and distribution centres by the spring.

According to the scheme, retailers can keep a control of energy costs, make unused space productive and meet environmental targets.

M&S plans to take half of the electricity used in its buildings from renewable sources by 2020.

It has signed agreements for purchasing renewable energy from anaerobic digestion plants, with various solar projects planned ahead.
