Infosys to set up 50 MW solar park in Karnataka

Infosys has proposed a 50 MW solar park in Karnataka that will meet bulk demands of power supply for their offices in Mysore, Bangalore and Mangalore, reports ET.

Energy minister of Karnataka D K Shivakumar said that the state government already had a round of talk with Infosys officials and they expressed their interest to enter into solar power segment in the state.

infosysAs part of their strategy to be self-sufficient in energy, Infosys plans to reduce carbon emission by promoting clean energy, the company said.

Solar technology is the best option for Karnataka with good solar intensity and returns can be expected in eight years. The solar power technology is easy to construct and maintain, the report claimed.

The cost of the project as per company’s expectations will be 360-380 crore. Land acquisition process in interiors of Karnataka is going on.

For the production of 1 MW of solar power, minimum five acres of land is required. Each MW of capacity will have an expenditure of Rs. 6.5 crore.

A formal proposal will be submitted to government after finalising the location and park will be commissioned in a year, Infosys said.

All Infosys offices in Karnataka consume about 95 million units of power in a year. The proposed 50 MW plant will generate 84 million units. The balance power will be bought from the grid.

After the initial installation and production, the company will consider escalating capacity based on the outcome, according to the report.

At present grid power costs 5.65 per unit while solar power will cost about three rupees per unit under its own production unit for company, reports ET.
