GE will complete work on projects to add 2.6-gigawatt of renewable energy capacity in Egypt by May.

The company has reported in a statement that more than 70 percent of advanced gas turbines to be installed have been delivered on site. The electricity generated from the projects can power 2.5 million homes, which will enter the grid in May 2015, in time to meeting the high demand for electricity during the summer months.

GE Chairman & CEO Jeffrey Immelt said the Egyptian government had created a positive environment for businesses by removing trade barriers. “Today, countries that succeed are those that can get in front of the trends, innovate, work together and deliver results. Egypt is reimagining a future centered on its people,” Immelt said.

According to estimates, Egypt will double its current renewable energy production and attain output of 50 GW by 2025 as demand for electricity is growing 10 to 12 percent a year. The power boost system being promoted by the government is expected to help meet the enhanced demand.

GE’s advanced gas turbines already help generate more than 9.5 gigawatts of electricity, nearly 30 percent of Egypt’s total installed capacity. As additional projects are developed, GE plans to offer both innovative technology and financing. This includes a focus on combined cycle gas turbines and renewables.
