Ascent Solar modules to boost Vanguard Space research program

Ascent Solar Technologies was selected by Vanguard Space Technologies to provide modules for two Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program that need lightweight, flexible, and durable PV solutions.

Vanguard will utilize proprietary space environment protection technology, automated manufacturing approaches and flexible PV, to create a thin, high power-to-weight ratio, large space solar arrays for space and integration into the wings of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Ascent will share their experience and technology with UAV solar products to provide optimized variants of their production PV.

The existing flexible, monolithically integrated CIGS product represents a starting point for a wide range of applications, including Vanguard’s space and UAV-based products. The production CIGS represent an excellent option to futuristic solar cells where availability is as critical to mission success as the flexibility, light weight, and durability have been, stated, Joseph Armstrong, CTO, Ascent Solar.
