RWE wins solar power storage projects in opencast mining sector

The Federal Network Agency has awarded RWE two more solar power storage projects in the opencast mining sector.

The latest conctracts are for the PV & Storage Garzweiler system with 19.4 megawatts peak output (MW peak) and a storage capacity of 6.5 MW and for the Plant PV & Storage Jackerath with 12.1 MWp and 4.1 MW battery storage.

In the latest innovation tender, the Federal Network Agency RWE promised a fixed market premium for solar power from the edge of the Garzweiler opencast mine. RWE had been awarded the contract for a comparable facility on the edge of the Inden opencast mine at the end of April.

The company will obtain offers for the components of the two planned plants and apply for building permits from the city of Bedburg. At the beginning of 2023, the two systems would generate and store electricity for the first time.
