Siemens Energy has announced a significant investment of €220 million to expand its transformer factory in Nuremberg, strengthening Germany’s role in the global energy transition. The project will add 350 new jobs and increase the facility’s production capacity by approximately 50 percent.
The foundation stone for the expansion was laid in the presence of Bavaria’s Minister President Dr. Markus Soder and Nuremberg Mayor Marcus Konig. With the expansion, Siemens Energy aims to meet the rising global demand for large transformers, which are vital for electricity grid expansion, renewable energy integration, and cross-border power transmission.
Nuremberg Factory Expansion: A Boost for Germany’s Energy Transition
The Nuremberg facility, employing nearly 1,000 workers, has been producing transformers since 1912. The expansion will add around 16,000 square meters of production space, with new areas expected to be operational by 2028. Despite the construction, factory operations will continue uninterrupted.
The Free State of Bavaria is supporting the initiative with up to €20 million in technology funding, underscoring Nuremberg’s importance as a hub for research, innovation, and clean energy technologies.
Leaders Emphasize Strategic Importance
Markus Soder, Bavarian Minister President, said: Nuremberg is becoming a central hub for the energy transition. Siemens Energy’s €220 million investment will create 350 jobs, strengthen research and innovation, and provide essential transformer technology for secure, climate-friendly power grids.
Christian Bruch, CEO of Siemens Energy, said: Germany remains competitive when business and politics work together. With over a century of transformer expertise, skilled employees, and strong infrastructure in Nuremberg, Siemens Energy is well-positioned to deliver key technologies worldwide to drive the energy transition.
Global Impact of Nuremberg Transformers
Transformers manufactured at the site are deployed worldwide to:
Connect offshore wind farms to national grids
Stabilize power networks against rising electricity demand
Enable international energy exchange through cross-border power links
Continued Commitment to Germany
This investment follows Siemens Energy’s €90 million converter production facility announced last year at the same location. Over the past three years, Siemens Energy has invested around €1 billion in Germany, creating about 1,300 new jobs in 2024 and planning up to 1,500 additional jobs by 2026.
With its expanded Nuremberg factory, Siemens Energy is reinforcing its position as a global leader in power grid infrastructure, while supporting Germany’s transition to a sustainable, resilient, and climate-friendly energy system.
